Wellness Works

ImageDid you see the news item about "Curing the Common Cold—No Way." Even though we have so many drug store choices and the sales of the popular Airborne have skyrocketed, science says there really is no way to cure the common cold other than to outlive it. Except for…and the final comments were this, "Stress definitely increases the likelihood you will get the cold virus. So yes, there is a way to fight the common cold. Reduce the stress in your life."

Wellness works.

Valentines and Chocolate

ImageAnd if you are going to give sweets to your Valentine, consider Dark Chocolate. Science says this indulgence is loaded with potent antioxidants called flavanols that have favorable effects on our arteries. (Focus with Dr. Ann Kulze, M.D.) Other superstar foods are blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, almonds, kale, red onions, green tea, oranges, whole oats and extra virgin olive oil.

What Makes Dermalogica Different?

Are Chile Peppers pepper?

ImageAny guesses? Christopher Columbus thought they must be peppers so he named them Chile Peppers when he discovered them in America. But scientifically, no. Their botanical family is with the tomatoes and eggplants, no relation to peppers. Some people say they are addictive because of the capsaicin. That is the hot stuff. Prolonged exposure to capsaicin reduces pain sensitivity so people like it to soothe arthritis pain. It also stimulates the release of endorphins. That'll make you feel good. Massage can do that without the burning!

But what about that burning in your mouth? Water won't help, so reach for milk. There is a compound in milk that attracts capsaicin and pulls it off your receptors. Whew. If you think jalapenos are hot (5,000 SHU with sweet bell peppers being 0 SHU), try the spiciest chile in the world Dorset Naga habanero (900,000 SHU).
